Passport Levels: Model, Batch, and Item.

What each passport level means, when to use each, and how level affects QR code use on labels.

Every passport in EU Digital Passport Processor is created at one of three levels: Model, Batch, or Item. The level determines how many physical batteries a single passport covers and how your GS1 Digital Link QR code is used on labels.

The three levels

Level	What it covers	Use when	QR code use
Model	One passport for all batteries of this product model. Every unit of the same model shares one passport.	The battery specification is identical across all production runs — same capacity, same chemistry, same performance data.	Print the same QR code on every unit of this model.
Batch	One passport per production run or batch. Each batch gets its own passport with batch-specific data.	Carbon footprint or recycled content varies between production runs. Common for manufacturers with multiple production sites or evolving processes.	Print a batch-specific QR code on each unit in that batch.
Item	One passport per individual battery unit. Every physical battery has its own passport.	High-value batteries that are individually tracked — large-format EV batteries, grid-scale storage units. Required when item-level traceability is mandated by the customer or regulation.	Print a unique QR code on each individual unit.

Most manufacturers start with ModelIf your battery specification is consistent across production runs, Model level is the simplest approach. You create one passport per product line and use the same QR code on every unit. You can always create Batch or Item level passports later for specific products that need more granularity.

How level affects data entry

At Model level, you enter data once and it applies to all batteries of that model. At Batch level, you enter the data that varies by batch (typically carbon footprint and recycled content) for each passport, while shared data (manufacturer name, battery chemistry) carries over. At Item level, every field can be unique per unit.

Can I change the level after creation?

No. Like the battery category, the passport level is locked at creation. If you need a different level, create a new passport. This is by design — the level determines the GS1 Digital Link QR code structure and cannot be changed without generating a new code.
