The first question every importer, authorised representative and manufacturer asks about battery passport compliance is what it costs. Here is our answer, in full.
The model
An annual platform licence: €10,000 per year, per goods-group module. Battery is live today; Steel, Textiles and others follow as the regulation activates them. The licence covers the whole pipeline: data ingestion, Annex XIII validation, passport hosting, the public viewer, QR data carriers, EU DPP Registry submission under our qualified seal, and in-EU backup hosting with full-period retention. Unlimited team seats. The licence is fixed; it does not rise with the number of passports you issue.
Activation: a one-off fee per passport, by battery category. €2.50 for an LMT battery, €5 for an industrial battery, €7.50 for an EV battery, charged once when the passport goes live. Drafts and edits are not billed.
Passport custody: an annual fee per live passport, by battery category. €5 for LMT, €10 for industrial, €15 for EV, for each year the passport stays live. Retired and superseded passports cost nothing.
UK-billed customers pay the same figures in sterling. Other currencies on request.
What it comes to at 10,000 batteries a year
The first twelve months are the licence plus the activations. Custody is invoiced at your first subscription anniversary, on the passports live at that moment, and every year after.
- LMT: €10,000 + (10,000 × €2.50) = €35,000 in the first year, or €3.50 per battery. At the anniversary: 10,000 × €5 = €50,000 custody.
- Industrial: €10,000 + (10,000 × €5) = €60,000 in the first year, or €6 per battery. At the anniversary: 10,000 × €10 = €100,000 custody.
- EV: €10,000 + (10,000 × €7.50) = €85,000 in the first year, or €8.50 per battery. At the anniversary: 10,000 × €15 = €150,000 custody.
From the second year the bill is the licence, the new activations and custody on the whole fleet still in the field. A second year of 10,000 EV passports is €10,000 + €75,000 + (20,000 × €15) = €385,000, because 20,000 passports are now live.
Why the licence is fixed
Most of what the platform does for you is done per organisation, not per battery: the registry connection, the qualified seal, the verified-operator role, the modules. A fixed licence charges for that once a year and leaves the per-battery lines small enough that the cost of compliance stays a fraction of the value of the battery, whether you place five hundred or fifty thousand.
Why custody is annual
Under Article 77 the operator that places a battery on the EU market must keep its passport accurate, complete, accessible and up to date for the battery's whole market life. That duty does not end at the sale. Custody is what keeps the passport valid for as long as the duty runs: hosting, in-EU backup, retention, registry synchronisation and state-of-health updates, charged per live passport, per year. When the regulation releases you, the fee releases with it.
If you host your own passports
Operators who run their own DPP infrastructure can buy the independent backup copy on its own: an annual custody service fee of €10,000 per module, plus the same custody rates per live passport, with no activation fee. The backup duty under Article 10(4) sits with an independent service provider, and that is the role the fee buys.
Model it yourself
