The first question every importer, authorised representative, and smaller manufacturer asks about battery passport compliance is the one this market answers worst: what does it cost?
Ask most vendors and the answer is a discovery call, a scoping workshop, and eventually a bespoke quote with implementation fees attached. That works if you are an OEM with a procurement team and a six-month evaluation cycle. It does not work if you are an importer with a few thousand batteries a year, a binding date of 18 February 2027, and nobody whose job is running RFPs.
So here is ours, in full.
The model
€5,000 per year, per organisation. Paid annually in advance. That covers the whole pipeline — data ingestion, Annex XIII validation, passport hosting, the public viewer, QR data carriers, and EU registry submission — with unlimited team seats and at least ten years of in-EU data retention included.
€25 per passport you activate. One flat rate, the same across every battery category — EV, industrial, LMT. You pay for passports you actually issue. There is no quota to guess in advance and nothing to pay for capacity you never use.
That is the entire price list. No implementation fee, no onboarding fee, no per-seat charges, no surcharge for one battery category over another. UK-billed customers pay the same figures in sterling — £5,000 a year and £25 per passport.
What it comes to in practice
The arithmetic is deliberately simple enough to do on the back of an envelope:
- 500 passports a year — €5,000 + (500 × €25) = €17,500 a year
- 5,000 passports a year — €5,000 + (5,000 × €25) = €130,000 a year
Your compliance cost scales with your obligation — the number of batteries you actually place on the market — not with a tier boundary you had to predict twelve months earlier.
Why per-passport
Because that is the shape of the legal obligation. Under the EU Battery Regulation, the unit of compliance is the battery placed on the market: each one needs its passport. A pricing model that charges per activated passport maps one-to-one onto the thing you are answerable for. If your volumes halve next year, your cost halves with them. If a shipment falls through, the passports you never issued cost you nothing.
Why we publish it
Three reasons, honestly stated.
First, it is how our buyer buys. The operators this platform is built for — importers, authorised representatives, SME and mid-market manufacturers — do not run procurement exercises. They compare, model the cost, and decide. A price you can only obtain through a sales process is a price designed for a different customer.
Second, hidden pricing costs you time you do not have. Every week spent in discovery calls to learn a number is a week not spent chasing carbon-footprint data from your cell supplier — the genuinely slow part of getting ready, as we set out in our piece on collecting carbon-footprint declaration data. The pricing question should take five minutes, because the data question will take months.
Third, a published price is a commitment. A bespoke quote can move when the vendor learns your deadline is close. A number printed on a public page cannot.
